When the medium of the Internet is used for marketing of products & services online its called Online marketing. Would just like to clarify that online marketing also entails marketing done by email and other forms of wireless media. Digital Customer Data and electronic customer relationship management systems (ECRMS) also comes under the banner of online marketing. Online marketing is the only medium on the internet where design, development, advertising and sales are combined for usage.

Online marketing is generally divided into 3 types:
-PPC (Pay Per Click): This refers to advertising for webpages and brands which is done on pre decided websites and helps in generating leads generation.
-Organic or Natural methods to improve the visibility of a website can be achieved through the search engine optimization technique.
-Social media marketing refers to the methodical use of marketing with other technological concepts and techniques to achieve specific goals for a company.

From a business perspective Online marketing is divided in to 3 business models:
-E-Commerce : A model whereby goods are directly sold to consumers (B2C).
-Achievement of sales from the use of websites for an organization in an organic manner is done in lead based websites.
-Affiliate marketing: Product or service development that arises when one entity is sold by the other active sellers for a share of profits.

Online Marketing has certain special advantages associated with it like the following below:
-First and foremost online marketing is inexpensive when we examine the cost of reaching the target audience.
-Online marketing allows for companies to reach a wider audience for a small fraction of traditional advertising budgets.

Online marketing allows customers to very well research and purchase products because of its particular online medium. This option allows owners to successfully fine tune their marketing campaigns towards achieving their business goals and cost-volume-profit analysis (CVP) analysis. Online marketing also has the unique advantage of measuring statistics easily and inexpensively almost all aspects of an online marketing campaign can be traced, measured, tested on certain basic parameters. Inability to touch, smell, or taste the articles while buying them is one of the biggest limitations of online marketing. One big limiting factor is that there is no easy accessibility to technology everywhere which limits the access to placed advertisements on the internet. The above statement can be understood better from the fact that the number of people having access to internet is less than the number of people who are have access to television. However with advancements in technology the internet has become very very accessible to a majority of people thus resulting in more users resorting to using it for purchase.
