Mixed martial arts, more commonly known as MMA, is one of the fastest growing combat sports in the world. It ranks alongside professional wrestling as a pay per view sport and more people are taking part. If you want to be amongst them then it is best to get the right MMA gear.

When MMA first developed the idea was that people from a various range of styles would fight each other, such as someone practicing karate fighting a sumo wrestler. During this early period, MMA was treated as a novelty. Over time this has developed into a more recognizable fighting style with distinct moves and naturally this means the equipment has had to be adapted for the sport.

Safety is a big issue. Ideally it should have thick padding designed to cushion the impact and it should not wear out over time. Whether you use a hook or a loop the gloves and shin guards should be securely fitted.

As mentioned earlier, the sport requires adaptable equipment. Fingerless gloves allow a combination of hand strikes and grappling while at the same time cushioning an impact. Shin guards that come with detachable insteps that will help stop any kicking techniques. Because you can strike beneath the belt it is vital to be prepared for any impact.

With MMA it is important not to neglect longer distance attacks. Focus mitts help you with punching, while Thai pads are great for effective kicking techniques. Most pads come reinforced with foam to withstand impact. Whether you are punching and kicking, remember to aim for the centre of the pad.

Once you have got the right equipment it also helps to have loose fitting clothing. In karate they would be known as a gi but they are also known as kimonos. This kind of clothes is light but also hard wearing. This is perfect for fighting and sparring as you can be sure you will not be embarrassed mid fight.

To complete the look of a serious martial artist, a kimono is a great look. There are different suits for men, women and children with clear sizes based on height and size. They are reinforced in the right areas to withstand any impact, so you do not have to worry about your clothes getting torn in the middle of a bout.

If your children are interested in MMA or any other martial arts it is vital to emphasize that is for sport and self defence only. Always work with a qualified instructor and if you are unsure what equipment to get you should ask them for advice. The right MMA gear will keep you safe, secure and give you the self confidence you need to get the most from the sport.
