If you are planning on traveling to Miami, and will be flying into Miami International Airport, the chances are that you will need to arrange some form of transportation to get you from the airport to your destination. Depending on how pressed for time you are, where you are heading, and your budget, there are any number of options available to you. Miami airport transportation includes everything from taxis to trains.
Of course, taxis are usually the fastest and most convenient way of getting from the airport to your destination and back again. If you do decide to take one, they can be found outside of the arrivals area on the lower level. But be warned, you may have to fight off a pack of other travelers with their eye on the same cab, in order to get one. If that happens, though, you can always ask one of the dispatchers located outside of every concourse for assistance in finding one.
The Super Shuttle is a shared-ride transport service that offers an economical alternative to taxis. Prices are per person, based on distance. Because the shuttle makes several stops to drop off or pick up other passengers, overall travel time may be somewhat higher than it would be if you were using a regular taxi. Reservations are not required, but are recommended.
If you are going directly to your hotel, it is worth verifying if it offers an airport shuttle service. The hotel shuttles are located outside of the upper departure area.
A number of companies provide private car and limousine rentals. In addition to offering cars to suit every taste and budget, their service comes complete with chauffeurs who will meet your flight, and drive you to your destination. This is an excellent alternative for those travelers continuing on to out of the way places, who don't drive or are unable to rent a car.
If you are up to the challenge, and not exhausted from a long flight, you can always use public transport. A Metrobus stop is located across from customs, outside of concourse E. There is also a night service called Airport Owl that operates between midnight and six o clock in the morning.
The Airport Flyer is an express bus that operates between Miami International Airport and Miami Beach. It makes one stop en route at the Metrorail Earlington Heights station. Travelers planning on heading downtown can get off, and take the train from there. The shuttle service runs every thirty minutes between six in the morning and eleven at night.
Another option is Tri-Rail, a commuter train operating between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. The Tri-Rail Airport Station is located to the airport's east, on NW 21st Street. Bus connections are available, with Metrobus offering free shuttle service to Tri-Rail ticket holders.
Car rentals are being moved to the new Rental Car Center, or RCC, located one mile east of Miami International Airport. All car rental companies that previously had desks inside the airport will now be located there, as well as many others that were located off-site. Until the completion of the automated, light-rail MIA Mover system, a shuttle service will operate between the RCC and the airport's terminals.
Finding Miami airport transportation may seem like an impossible task to the jet-lagged traveler. But don't worry. Airport personnel are always ready to provide assistance. Just look for their blue uniforms in the arrival and departure curbside areas.
